PROJECT BACKGROUND

For over 120 years, our community has had a strong tradition and commitment to the

students of Rawlins County, and we are now at a crossroads. Our Junior/Senior High

School was built in 1923, and has served us well for 100 years. Last summer, the building

was severely damaged by fire, and now is the time to move forward stronger than ever,

and rebuild our school to serve our community for the next 100 years!

Our district is considering two options to rebuild the school and we are working toward a

May bond issue election. With a focus on fiscal responsibility, we have carefully developed

two options.

We value your input, and we need to understand what you will support as we move

forward. We cannot do this without you!

Elementary School:

In 2020, a facility assessment was completed for the Elementary School that identified

many maintenance/facility costs that the building will require over the next 20 years.

Our goal is to either renovate the existing Elementary School to address several of these

issues, or build a Kindergarten through 12th Grade building at the existing Jr/Sr High

School location. For districts similar in size to ours, K-12 buildings work very well and have

proven more efficient. Potential uses for the existing Elementary School have not been

determined.

Junior/Senior High School:

The district has received insurance money to cover part of the cost of rebuilding the school.

However, the insurance money will not cover the entire cost of rebuilding and the project

will require funds from a bond issue; we are planning for a bond election in May 2024.

To honor the history of our building, our architects are developing a plan to reuse the

front entry stone elements to blend the “old” with the new building design. The stone

elements would be taken down and then rebuilt. The west façade is planned to be brick

and stone. The back of the building (east façade) may have metal panel.
